A spiritual master can only be one who understood essence of spirituality in totality. In the last about 150 years only two souls finally succeeded in reaching stage of enlightenment… Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana! There was nothing nobler than following teachings of these two enlightened souls to gain enlightenment in present life.
The personal presence of a spiritual master was never necessitated. By following writings of one, one could easily follow precepts of spirituality contained in Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads.
