Para Brahma, consciousness as you say is termed Brahman in Upanishads (independent treatises). If an individual grain of sand is an independent soul atman, the whole mound God Almighty (Brahman). And we were primarily a soul atman, a spirit on its cosmic life cycle of 8.4 million manifestations that entailed an earthly journey of 96.4 million years.
Being the highest manifest stage in cosmic life cycle, we as human beings can undertake spiritual journey to reach stage of enlightenment in present life. The moment our karma negates to zero, we reach stage of absolute purity as a soul atman. The cosmic journey finally comes to an end. As a liberated soul atman we finally merged with God Almighty, remain in Vaikuntha (kingdom of God).
