Literal reading never helps one on path of pure spirituality. Many supernatural powers are gained by enlightened ones, to be used by them for benefit of entire mankind. These powers could never be used for individual self or purposes of demonstration! The supernatural powers were gained by an enlightened one through path of spirituality, indulging in yoga meditation… never literally!
Mahavira, 24th Tirthankara of Jainism (preceptor) rightly said, miracles were never there to be! Those who indulged in commercial usage of supernatural powers ultimately suffered in the end. In present times many indulged in open demonstration of psychic powers, something prohibited in spiritual world! All these psychic powers were gained through chanting of mantras as detailed in scriptures.
