Commentaries were always written by yogis, Rishis… seekers who indulged in path of jnana yoga (absolute wisdom) to reach God in their lifetime. Those indulging in bhakti yoga (path of total submission to God) could not write a commentary. Religious practitioners believed more in bhakti than jnana yoga. For a traveler of religious path, indulgence in contemplation on cosmic truths of life contained in Vedas, Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita was not necessitated. Just by total submission to God one could reach God. Such a practice was possible in mediaeval times but not in a Kali Yuga where indulgence in path of jnana yoga (absolute wisdom) was an absolute must.
Adi Shankaracharya, Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana… all the three indulged in path of jnana yoga. Adi Shankaracharya wrote commentaries on Bhagavad Gita, primary Upanishads and Brahma Sutras.
