All depends on our definition of happiness, it varies with every individual! A so-called spiritual or religious master basking in glow of material riches may be happy externally but for how long? True happiness always emanates from within. Walking path of truthfulness when we indulged in welfare of entire mankind… true happiness was experienced by us most of time. This all the time happened with true spiritual masters like Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana!
In reality, happiness belongs to the physical manifest self, never our true self existing in our heart! When the physical manifest self worked in synchronization with requirements of our true inner self, one experienced intermittent stages of total bliss, tranquility! On path of pure spirituality external happiness carried no meaning… it was totally temporal, ephemeral! Living in costly hermitages surrounded by hordes of followers… how a religious or spiritual master could be happy from within.
Swami Vivekananda all his life worked for welfare of entire mankind. At a very young age he tried bartering spirituality for worldly wealth. His efforts took him in 1983 to Chicago for attending parliament of religions. He was hopeful that he would successfully barter spirituality for precious US dollars. The spirituality Swami Vivekananda talked about was beyond intelligence of all in West. He practically returned empty-handed and also brokenhearted. Only a few years later he succumbed to death.
True spirituality was difficult to practice… prime reason why most so-called spiritual or religious teachers of present times indulged in worldly pursuits of life amassing great wealth building ashrams (hermitages) after another. The likes of Swami Vivekananda are not to be found anywhere in present times.
If we truly desire pursing spirituality in present times then teachings of Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita come to our rescue. Indulging in 700 shlokas verses contained in Bhagavad Gita one could easily gain enlightenment, moksha salvation in present life.
