Fruits of Karma always belonged to Soul Atman within

The war of Mahabharata was not an ordinary war; it was a war to re-establish dharma (righteousness) against evil forces of adharma (lawlessness). Lord Krishna tried his best to appease the other side, the Kauravas but to no avail. He gave a full 13 years before instructing Arjuna to indulge in karma and eliminate all evil forces baring their fangs. Lord Krishna rightly says, to save lives of millions of countrymen and soldiers if lives of few are sacrificed then no sin is committed.

Arjuna was not prepared to fight the enemy, the Kauravas as it consisted of his maternal grandfather, his revered teacher Guru Dronacharya, many relatives and friends. Arjuna feared that in this fratricidal war, he would incur sins galore. To escape aftermath of war of dharma, Arjuna was acting cowardly. At this point, Lord Krishna admonishes Arjuna not to fear results of war, the fruits of karma as he would be fighting not for individual self but for saving mankind from anticipated untold miseries and sufferings.

As a Pandava chieftain Arjuna was duty-bound to protect citizens from surrendering to enemy, says Lord Krishna. Duryodhana, the Kaurava chieftain could not be trusted, says Lord Krishna. Furthermore, Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that he was primarily a spiritual being… a soul atman, the spirit within and not a manifest physical human form. Life and death was part of cosmic cycle. After death of present form, our soul atman would again manifest a new form. Lord Krishna advises Arjuna not to succumb to pressures of Moha (extreme emotional attachment) towards those in the enemy team.

As per Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita, fruits of karma performed by human beings always belonged to our soul atman, the consciousness within and never the manifest physical human form. It is not within human form to manifest a soul atman. Our soul atman was the absolute master and controller of human body. Realizing cosmic truths of life, overpowering feelings of Moha (extreme emotional attachment), Arjuna finally accepts dictates of Lord Krishna and prepares self to fight the enemy head-on.
