We primarily were a consciousness, soul atman manifesting human form to work out our karma. As a soul atman we manifested human form to cleanse self of dross impurities within.
We were a spiritual being manifesting human form. The human form was not competent to manifest a soul atman. Scriptures of Hinduism and other religion of world confirmed this.
As a soul atman before manifesting human form for the first time, we had already manifested 7.3 million bodies in insect, plant and animal life. In human form we had a maximum of 1.1 million manifestations to reach stage of enlightenment, to liberate self from cycle of birth and death forever.
By indulging in spirituality we finally reached end stage of cosmic life, 8.4 millionth manifestation… the stage of Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed.
