As a physical manifest human being, you are justified in your concern. What if you were not a physical manifest human form but a soul atman, the consciousness within on its cosmic life cycle of 8.4 million manifestations that entailed an earthly journey of 96.4 million years? As per scriptures of Hinduism we were primarily a spiritual being that manifested human form to work out its karma, remove dross impurities within. It was not within capability of human form to manifest a soul atman, the vice versa being true.
Manifestation after manifestation, body after body our soul atman keeps manifesting new forms until it reaches last leg of cosmic life, 8.4 millionth manifestation. Human form is the highest manifest stage in cosmic life cycle. After death of present body, based on residual balance of karma at the time of death our soul atman manifests a new body to start a new cycle of life. The new life, the new form was directly based on residual balance of karma of previous manifestations.
If the residual balance of karma at the time of death demands our soul atman manifesting form of a laborer, one just could not be born a Prince. In entire cosmos, laws of karma and evolution were governing and none could change this equation, not even God Almighty. God always acts as Dhrishta (onlooker) never interfering with creation of his. In the circumstances, if we say we suffered for misdeeds of past life we were not aware of, we need understanding that it was our karma in past that fructified now.
As per laws of karma as we sow so shall we reap nothing less or more! But the intelligent human being do not interpolate laws of karma, God Almighty hid a portion of karma of past lives from manifesting at the time of birth of new form. This portion of karma is termed Prarabdha karma in Hinduism. Prarabdha karma can always fructify now, few months later, few years later or even few manifestations later. When we become victim of fate, it is negative residual balance of karma from previous lives fructifying now.
If we were lucky to win a lottery all of a sudden, it was positive residual balance of karma from previous manifestations fructifying in present life.
By understanding doctrine of karma in totality, we reached the root of our query. By indulging in good karma, positive karma most of time in present life we can eradicate traces of negative residual balance of karma from previous manifestations. The shackles of Prarabdha karma were difficult to cut but not impossible. In my search for God at one stage of life I got totally stuck. Whatever negative karma I may have indulged in present life, I asked forgiveness for the same from God Almighty.
But what of negative residual balance of karma from previous manifestations! I did not know the mantra for cutting Prarabdha karma from previous manifestations. After indulging in doctrine of karma for more than 15 years I finally realized the mantra for Prarabdha karma. Even then I took a long period of over three years to absolve self from all bondages of previous lives. At no stage of life we could blame God Almighty or laws of karma and evolution. Everything was inherent, inbuilt.
Human form was just a medium for our soul atman, the spirit within to purify itself in totality. Indulging in karma, nishkama karma way of life was the only solution. We must live life like a trustee, a true Karma Yogi. In the trusteeship concept we were only a doer, a custodian… caretaker taking care of things that already belonged to God Almighty. To manifest life, to take charge of destiny we must establish absolute control over ego (Aham in Hinduism). Only then we could understand laws of karma in totality.
