The Prime Reason for Decline of Buddhism in India was Non-acceptance of Existence of Soul Atman

The prime reason for decline of Buddhism in India was non-acceptance of existence of soul atman. The existence of soul atman was integral to Hinduism. With coming of Adi Shankaracharya, Buddhism got a direct hit and went in background.

In Hinduism not in hundreds but thousands reached stage of enlightenment, moksha salvation in their lifetime. Buddhism evolved behind teachings of Gautama Buddha, the one and only preceptor of Buddhism. Furthermore, Buddhism refers to worldly affairs as dukhma (full of misery). This was a totally negative attitude of looking at life.

Hinduism was primarily based on positivity in every sphere of life. As souls’ atmans contained dross impurities within, indulgence in karma was necessitated to cleanse souls of dross impurities within. How the beautiful world could be termed as dukhma, a place full of misery!

Buddhists non-belief in God was the second primary reason for routing of Buddhism in India. Existence of God was primarily to Hinduism. As detailed by Adi Shankaracharya in his doctrine of Advaita Vedanta, God Almighty (Brahman) was the only truth of life. Other than Brahman nothing existed in cosmos.

The famed University of Nalanda was not a Buddhist Centre of learning. It was primarily focused on teachings contained in Vedas, Upanishads… Bhagavad Gita and other scriptures of Hinduism! Absolute facts of life could never be belied. It is a different matter that Buddhist Viharas were more concentrated in Bihar state of India where also existed the famed Nalanda University.

Buddhism primarily is not a religion but a following of an enlightened one similar to Christianity!
