All the concepts of spirituality were primarily based on… power of contemplation, introspection… logical reasoning! In absence of contemplation none or earth could understand anything relating to spirituality. Sages and Rishis of earlier era in the deep dense confines of Himalayas indulged in contemplation to reach deeper values of life presently contained in Hinduism philosophy.
Yoga meditation is always indulged through path of contemplation, logical reasoning… introspection! Contemplation was also the path followed in metaphysics. Everything from origin of cosmos (big bang theory) to dissolution of cosmos (Pralaya in Hinduism) was detailed in Upanishads (independent treatises). Even science, metaphysics could not reach level of contemplation indulged by Rishis of yester era. Bhagavad Gita explicitly details everything relating to world of souls atmans. But metaphysics is still grappling with precept of souls atmans.
The invocation by Rishis who dwelt on a much higher mental plane was much more abstract than present-day metaphysics.
