What is Nishkama Karma Yoga Hinduism

Indulgence in karma that creates no further bondage is termed path of nishkama karma yoga. When we offered fruits of karma performed to God Almighty all the time, we did not create bondage any further. Our desires and resulting attachment caused bondages in day-to-day life.

To free self from cycle of such bondages, our indulgence in path of nishkama karma yoga was mandated by god. By believing and practicing trusteeship concept one all the time absolved self of karma performed. We were primarily a custodian, caretaker in the cosmic journey of life taking care of things that already belonged to God Almighty all the time. We were only an instrument, a soldier of god.

Indulgence in nishkama karma yoga was necessitated for travelers of spiritual path who desired reaching God in present life. Path of nishkama karma does not mean working with a detached attitude. Indulgence in karma with an unattached attitude is what nishkama karma all about.

King Janaka (father of Sita in Ramayana) and JRD Tata (erstwhile scion of Tata Empire) excelled in this practice. Karma yogis’ par excellence, both King Janaka and JRD Tata preached and practiced concept of trusteeship all the time. Not for a single moment did they believe that anything belonged to them. JRD Tata and King Janaka worked for welfare of mankind all the time.

In yesteryears, many seekers left confines of their home in search of God. Unless we burnt our karma in totality, we could never absolve self from bondages of earthly life. We just could not follow path undertaken by Siddhartha Gautama in the early stages of life. Just by touching feet of wife and child, one does not absolve self of karma in entirety. Siddhartha Gautama paid price of this neglect all his life.

Those who believed the concept of indulgence in karma with a detached attitude were primarily wrong. Non-indulgence in karma never absolves self of karma in totality. To negate karma to zero our indulgence in karma with an unattached attitude was mandated by God. Acting like a trustee, offering fruits of karma performed to God Almighty all the time was the only way to negate our karma to zero.

Our ego (Aham in Hinduism) can only be subdued by travelling path of nishkama karma yoga.
