Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita says… human beings directly evolved from stage of animals, animals from stage of plants… plants from stage of insects and so on. The increase in human population was reflective of more and more animals evolving to stage of human beings. Indulging in Upanishads (independent treatises) we could analyze the entire evolutionary cycle starting from amoeba (the first manifestation by a soul atman in cosmic life cycle).
