It is not India but books of Hindu philosophy that state every human being on mother earth was son or daughter of god. The cause behind this reasoning was… we were primarily a spirit, a consciousness… a miniscule part of God Almighty existing in our heart. In essence we were not distinct from God Almighty.
If an individual grain of sand is an independent soul atman, the whole mound God Almighty! As detailed in Bhagavad Gita we were integral part of God. Mahavira (24th Tirthankara of Jainism) rightly said, every human being on mother earth had the spark of divinity within to become a man god like Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed! As per Mahavira praying to enlightened ones does not mean anything. Mahavira always said we must try becoming one!
