The way to reach God existed only in India through scriptures of Hinduism primarily Bhagavad Gita. Even in yesteryears in erstwhile Bharatvarsha yogis, seekers succeeded in reaching God via path of spirituality, yoga meditation as detailed in Bhagavad Gita. The same was applicable even today.
Enlightenment, stage of moksha salvation could never be reached unless one indulges in teachings of Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita. As Bhagavad Gita could never be understood literally, it demands following path of contemplation, introspection… logical reasoning!
In present times one could never reach God via path of bhakti yoga alone. Our indulgence in path of jnana yoga (absolute wisdom), nishkama karma yoga was necessitated to reach God in present life. There was never a shortcut path to reaching stage of enlightenment. God Almighty ordained a long journey of 1.1 million manifestations in human form to reach stage of enlightenment.
Emulating path of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa or Maharishi Ramana we could do so in present life or leave it for future manifestations. Both Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana initially started their search of God via path of bhakti yoga (path of total submission to God Almighty) but finding God could not be reached via path of bhakti yoga alone in present Kali Yuga, both switched to path of jnana yoga and nishkama karma yoga to reach God in their lifetime.
We must never forget in the last about 150 years amongst 7000 million people existing world over only Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana finally succeeded in gaining enlightenment in their lifetime!
