For Swami Vivekananda, remaining bachelor was a blessing in disguise, being free of bickering of married life. For Sage Yajnavalkya (composer and compiler of most voluminous Brihadaranyaka Upanishad) married life was not a hurdle in gaining enlightenment. He not only gained enlightenment in his lifetime but also facilitated his wife Maitreyi to gain Brahma jnana, become an enlightened one!
In the entire history of mankind Maitreyi is one of two ladies who reached stage of enlightenment and in whose memory Maitreyi College in New Delhi India existed.
The difference between married and unmarried life lay in our perception. As detailed in Bhagavad Gita by Lord Krishna… one who indulges in spiritual journey even while remaining in Grihastha ashram (married life) was the biggest Yogi of all.
