Most human beings (almost all) who indulged in practice of Brahmacharya Vrata (celibacy) understood it wrongly. Celibacy was not all about abstaining from sexual indulgence. The physical aspect of celibacy definitely means abstaining from a sexual relationship and channelizing sexual energy towards the only goal of life. The real meaning of celibacy stems from the fact that on path of pure spirituality negation of negative thoughts in totality was an absolute must. This becomes possible by practice of absolute celibacy of which physical celibacy constituted hardly 10% of total job.
Stopping the flow of negative thoughts to our brain in totality is what absolute celibacy all about. Such human beings are rarely to find. One who succeeds in practicing absolute celibacy for a period of 12 years in continuation finally gains enlightenment at the end of journey. Sage Vishwamitra, a highly accomplished Sage of his era on finding a maiden woman taking Bath in forlorn circumstances in deep dense jungles (forests) fell from grace. He had to repeat practice of celibacy all over again. On path of celibacy not a single lapse was permitted.
In the last about 150 years amongst 7 billion people existing world over only Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana practiced absolute celibacy to reach stage of enlightenment and finally salvation moksha.
