Enlightenment could not be gained through path of karma yoga or jnana yoga alone. One needs following path of both karma yoga and jnana yoga to reach God in one’s lifetime. By karma Yoga we mean path of nishkama karma yoga. King Janaka (father of Sita in Ramayana) was a perfect karma Yogi. He indulged in affairs of his kingdom without attaching self to fruits of karma performed. Such human beings are difficult to find in present days. JRD Tata scion of Tata Empire was a karma Yogi par excellence. All his life JRD Tata devoted himself to welfare of mankind at large. Knowing nothing about Bhagavad Gita, JRD Tata followed principles of Bhagavad Gita in toto.
Path of jnana yoga gets necessitated to indulge in scriptures of different religions of world. Path of jnana yoga means indulgence in contemplation, introspection… logical reasoning to reach hidden underlying cosmic truths of life contained in sacred texts of different religions of world. In present times one could never realize god without traveling path of jnana yoga (absolute wisdom). Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana started in search of God via path of bhakti yoga but finding God could not be reached via path of bhakti yoga alone both finally switched to path of karma yoga and jnana yoga. King Janaka also indulged in path of jnana yoga and karma yoga to reach God in his lifetime.
