No one worships idols… people worshipped god in the image of idols. Most idols were in the image of human beings and lesser in image of animals. The reason was apparent… human form was the highest manifest stage in cosmic life cycle. It was only in human form a soul atman finally gains emancipation from cycle of birth and death forever.
Unable to visualize, conceptualize god in Nirakaar form (having no form) and also Nirguna (without an attribute)… mankind with passage of time created hordes of images of God in form of idols. Believers of God in Sakaar form (having a form) indulged in religious practices (rituals)… went to temples! Those who believed in Nirakaar form God always traveled path of spirituality, yoga meditation to reach God.
Worshipping God in Sakaar form is an age-old practice… not necessitated in present times! In the present we must concentrate on Nirakaar, Nirguna form of God… path of spirituality, yoga meditation to reach God in present life time. Mere indulgence in rituals carried no meaning on path of pure spirituality. In present times one could never reach God following path of bhakti yoga alone.
