The biggest work on the topic of sex is Kama Sutra by Sage Vatsyayana. The Khajuraho temples in Madhya Pradesh, India represent mastery of Indians in the art of lovemaking. Everything contained in Kama Sutra and temples of Khajuraho was symbolic. Sex always had two precepts. One the art of lovemaking that was very much essential for continuing the act of progeny. Second the deep underlying ingrained meaning, by transmuting sexual energy human beings could become a man god in their lifetime. The second aspect of sex was the most preferred in Indian philosophy, path of spirituality.
By channelizing sexual energy towards the only goal of life, stage of enlightenment… human beings finally emancipated self from cycle of birth and death forever, becoming immortal in the cosmic journey of life! This became possible by practice of celibacy (Brahmacharya Vrata). The delicate art of transmuting sexual energy towards gaining enlightenment is contained in scriptures of Hinduism, the oldest and foremost of all religions existing on mother earth. Sex never was ugly but in public, the subject was a taboo. Perhaps the beauty of sex lay in the eyes of the beholder.
In the West sex was a pastime but for true Indians, a path to God Almighty!
