Pranayama (breathing exercise) primarily relates to yoga meditation, path of spirituality! We were primarily a spirit, a spiritual being manifesting human form. As a spirit, consciousness residing in our heart, our soul atman was the real self of us. To reach this real self our indulgence in pranayama gets necessitated. It was only through breath we could reach our consciousness existing in our heart.
From yogic exercise point of view, pranayama was extremely relaxing.
