Neither of the two was correct. A philanthropist indulged in spiritual routines of life that fitted one’s ego. One indulges in charity that satisfied our ego.
A devotee thinks of God, prays to God… worshipped God every second of life but nothing more!
Essence of life laid in reaching God, realizing God. Mahavira, Gautama Buddha, Jesus Christ, Prophet Mohammed, Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana indulged in spirituality, yoga meditation to finally reach God in their lifetime. They all gained enlightenment and finally moksha salvation. Becoming a pure soul atman was our cosmic goal of life. We were a spiritual being manifesting human form. To cleanse self of dross impurities within we manifest human form.
In present times path of bhakti yoga alone does not lead to God. Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana both started in search of God via path of bhakti yoga but finally switched to path of jnana yoga and nishkama karma yoga to reach God in their lifetime. In present times our indulgence in scriptures like Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads was necessitated to reach stage of enlightenment. Indulgence in scriptures demands our following path of contemplation as nothing could be understood literally.
A philanthropist though worked for welfare of mankind most of time also had a perceptible ego! How can such a one stand high on pedestal of pure spirituality!
