Living in the Present or Past – West vs India

The biggest fallacy of Indian life is living in past or future, never present. Compared to India people in West live their life only in present, never caring about past or future! And people called them materialistic. Living in present does not mean we had a materialistic pattern of thoughts but we definitely had one big disadvantage. We were not spiritual but more of religious in life. It is only recently trend seems to be reversing. People are becoming more of spiritual than religious. Does this sound good for spirituality?

Absolutely not! Being spiritual does not mean we also believed in scriptures of Hinduism that directly led to God Almighty. In present times none could reach God via any other religion than Hinduism. It was scriptures like Bhagavad Gita, the sermon given to mankind by Lord Krishna… Upanishads (independent treatises) that led human beings towards God Almighty! People in West believed in God but not Brahman, the true creator of entire cosmos. Even a single precept like big bang theory was beyond their reach.

What ailed Hinduism today were its followers all over India. Most realized essence of Bhagavad Gita yet preferred travelling path of religion (path of rituals) that never led anywhere. People in India had a very ripe opportunity to indulge in teachings contained in Bhagavad Gita to reach God in present life. Yet, most preferred indulgence in rituals just to satisfy or appease traditional customs, societal norms… wish of elders. Most indulged in karma so as to retain a seat in swarga (heaven) never wanting to realize that such a concept did not hold well in spirituality. We either lived in past or worked for our future.

Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa and Maharishi Ramana both cut across this rut of life to reach God in present life. Initially both started in search of God via path of karma yoga and bhakti yoga and finding God could not be reached via path of bhakti yoga alone, both finally switched to path of jnana yoga (absolute wisdom) to reach God. It was such seekers who finally transcend ephemeral life to reach God.

Even basic concepts like enlightenment were missing from teachings in West. Feigning total ignorance in matters spiritual, most seekers in West pursued a wrong path of spirituality that led nowhere! We lacked absolute faith in God Almighty. On the surface we appeared sincere but internally we were not. To reach God in present life, we had to be 100% truthful in life. Furthermore, our belief in God, our belief in path of jnana yoga, our belief in practice of absolute celibacy for a minimum period of 12 years in continuation was an absolute must. All these things were missing in life of people in West.

The gist of the matter remains… India is the spiritual citadel of world and shall always remain so. Anyone who desired reaching God in present life must indulge in teachings contained in Bhagavad Gita. There was no other alternative.
