In Hinduism the concept of a guru was different from Christian clergy! A religious or spiritual master was all the time free to indulge in life as per free will, power of discrimination bestowed on us by grace of God Almighty. We were not born a slave to our destiny. Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita says the highest Yogi was one who indulges in path of spirituality to reach God even while living in Grihastha ashram (family life).
In Hinduism one could follow path of spirituality and along the journey marry and settle in life. Alternatively a householder could indulge in spirituality to reach God in one’s lifetime. A true guru in Hinduism was one who reaches stage of enlightenment before preaching anything. Mahavira (24th Tirthankara of Jainism) rightly said, do not preach unless you become an enlightened one! Marrying or not marrying was never decided by the society. One was totally free to decide ones journey of life.
Some travelers of spiritual path like Swami Vivekananda who considered marriage as an impediment to spiritual progress remained a bachelor all throughout life. As detailed in Hinduism scriptures even marriage was not a hindrance to practice of celibacy (Brahmacharya Vrata). One could successfully indulge in practice of Brahmacharya Vrata (celibacy) even while married.
