Looking deep within we would realize that meditation is the path through which we indulged in yoga (the root word yog). Meditation was always performed indulging in contemplation, introspection… logical reasoning! The precept of meditation was not a proprietary of any religion. Even before Mahavira (24th Tirthankara of Jainism) came into being, yogis in erstwhile Bharatvarsha (now India) indulged in contemplation to realize, invoke cosmic truths of life. The jnana wisdom contained in Vedas was invoked by various Rishis (accomplished sages) directly from domain of God.
To reach our true inner self existing in our heart, contemplation was the only means! Lying in shavasna pose of yoga I always indulged in pranayama (breathing exercise) to concentrate on breathing. Contemplation is best indulged lying in shavasna pose of yoga.
Even before existence of any religion on mother earth, human beings must have contemplated on anything that was supernatural. This led Hindus worshipping air (Vayu Devta), rains (Varuna Devta)… sun (Surya Devta)… fire (Agni Devta) etc. Something that was intangible was worshipped, prayed to!
Meditation was never about sitting in a hall or a closed room concentrating on something or nothing! It is only via path of contemplation human beings reached, realized the hidden meaning of sacred texts contained in scriptures of different religions of world.
