Travelers of spiritual path gave precedence to suffering than happiness! Unless one indulged in prayaschitta, we could never absolve self of dross impurities within… dissolve our sins forever! For a true seeker both happiness and sufferings were two sides of the same coin. For a seeker the glass was always half full, and for one indulging in material pursuits of life… half empty!
Spiritual travelers indulged in karma mostly via path of sufferings, never happiness! Only then we could burn our karma in totality to reach stage of absolute purity. Human beings who worked for welfare of mankind all the time also suffered most of time. This was inevitable. Christianity believes in the precept of suffering as demonstrated by Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ absolved sinners by taking their pain unto self.
Those indulging in material pursuits of life never indulged in sufferings voluntarily.
