Can anyone become a Nobel Laureate without formal schooling? Can enlightenment be achieved without indulging in spirituality? Path of asceticism… austerity, self-denial, abstinence, non-indulgence, self-discipline was necessitated to reach spiritual goal of life. Path of spirituality demands establishing absolute control over five senses and mind, subduing our ego in totality forever.
Control over five senses and mind, ego can only be established by practicing asceticism of the highest order! We can inculcate self-discipline, practice of non-indulgence, self-denial by traveling path of nishkama karma yoga (not attaching self to fruits of karma performed). Rigorous self-discipline, highest order of patience, persistence and perseverance was necessitated to undertake spiritual journey.
To realize our true inner self existing in our heart, to undertake inner journey towards our soul atman existing in our heart karma needs to be burnt to zero. Asceticism was integral part of spiritual life, one could never do without! Anything intangible could never be known through parameters of science, formal schooling. Journey towards inner self was covered indulging in yoga meditation.
