Before becoming a republic India was a conglomerate of above 600 princely states. The collective power of India in those times was called Bharatvarsha, a nation comprising of above 600 Independent princely states. When Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel realized that working independently all these Independent princely states may contribute little to progress of India and also were insufficient, incompetent to handle, repel any aggression of invaders he combined them under umbrella of India.
The spirit remaining the same, all these princely states merged into 22 independent states and 9 union territories as part of India and having representation in Indian constituent assembly.
From the beginning India (erstwhile Bharatvarsha) has worked as a collective spirit. Even in times to come the form of India would remain federal but united in spirit.
