The moment one gains enlightenment, there were two paths to follow… one taken by Gautama Buddha and other by Mahavira (24th Tirthankara of Jainism).
Gautama Buddha gained enlightenment at the ripe age of 80. By that time his body was so frail that he preferred leaving the mortal frame at age 81. On the contrary Mahavira reached stage of enlightenment at age 42. Thereafter he engaged in Deshna (discourses) for full 30 years before leaving his mortal frame. After an enlightened one leaves mortal frame… the liberated soul atman finally enters Vaikuntha (abode of God, kingdom of God) forever.
