In yesteryears when people… commoners, masses were not able to conceptualize Nirakaar form of God (having no form) various sages and saints wrote many parables, religious stories to convey the hidden inner meaning. Everything in Hindu mythology relates to a moral in the story. Everything was symbolic. But with passage of time people identified the story as a true narrative.
In the entire history of mankind there has never been one like Lord Shiva. No god by the name of Lord Shiva ever existed. All were symbolic, only attributes of God Almighty. Lord Shiva was the destroyer attribute of God Almighty, Brahman in Hinduism. Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita explicitly says to offer obeisance, worship only to Brahman (God) and never the attributes.
The true reality of Lord Shiva can be realized only by travelling path of spirituality as detailed in Bhagavad Gita. Through path of religion (rituals) one never gained anything in life. In the present Kali Yuga God can only be reached via path of spirituality, never religion.
