Vedic traditions mean indulging in field of spirituality more than field of religion (rituals). Understanding gist of Vedas (Hinduism revelations) was not for masses, commoners.
Who could travel path of spirituality… not one who had family responsibilities to fulfill Kshatriyas (the warrior clan) who had inbuilt will to do or die were most competent to indulge in spirituality to reach hidden cosmic truths of life. Brahmins indulged in religious rituals, Vaishyas in trading and Shudras in service of the first three varnas. Indulgence in contemplation, logical reasoning was easy for Kshatriyas.
Most kings were Kshatriyas. Many princes left domains of their kingdom in search of cosmic truths of life. Mahavira (24th Tirthankara of Jainism) and Siddhartha Gautama were one of them.
