If we desire gaining enlightenment in present life, it is best if we indulged in teachings of Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita… summum bonum of spirituality! In my spiritual pursuit of God, I never cared for what Mahavira, Gautama Buddha did… I only took care that I did not repeat their mistakes. Life history of enlightened souls was always enlightening in various aspects of spirituality.
We must always remember following teachings of Bhagavad Gita all enlightened souls on mother earth including Jesus Christ and Gautama Buddha reached stage of enlightenment. But following teachings of Gautama Buddha and Jesus Christ not a single human being in West reached stage of enlightenment.
