When a mortal succumbs to death, the body dies but the immortal soul again manifests a new body based on residual balance of karma at the time of death. The new manifestation can be immediate or kept in abeyance until matching parents are found. For soul to manifest a new body, availability of matching parents on planet earth was an absolute must.
If matching parents are not available, the soul hibernates in heaven or hell (Swarga or Naraka in Hinduism). In heaven (swarga) if the residual balance of karma at the time of death was positive and hell (naraka) if negative! No sooner matching parents become available, the hibernating soul immediately manifests a new body to start new journey of life.
The above explanation is based on scriptures of Hinduism primarily Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads (independent treatises). Hinduism scriptures are absolutely clear about continuity of life termed transmigration, reincarnation of soul.
Travelling path of spirituality when human beings reached stage of enlightenment, the cosmic journey for a soul finally ends. When an enlightened one abandons mortal frame, it is no ordinary death. The cycle of birth and death for the liberated pure soul having come to an end, it need not manifest a body again. The liberated soul finally enters Vaikuntha (kingdom of God).
As every soul was immortal, could not be created or destroyed; it is through process of karma it keeps refining self gaining absolute purity at the end of journey.
Spiritually speaking human beings were only a pawn in the life journey of a soul.
My personal experience of what happens to soul after death
Around eight or nine years of age one thought overpowered me. I was again and again hounded to take a definite decision, whether I wanted to return again and again into the endless cycle of birth and death? I thought over this matter for many days and finally came to a conclusion… I shall make my present life the last. I did not want to return into the cauldron of fire, cycle of Samsara (worldly life) again and started my pursuit of god, journey of spirituality.
Having realized self, realized God in 1993 37 years of age, moment I leave mortal frame I shall attain moksha salvation forever. Burning my karma to zero, overpowering five senses and mind I (as a pure soul) had finally crossed the barrier of life forever. I was not to have a rebirth again. Me as soul after death of present body would become free from clutches of death forever.
