God helps those who help themselves simply means everything in cosmic system was directly governed by laws of karma… as we sow so shall we reap nothing more or less. We just could not indulge in karma with a detached attitude… something followed by millions who flocked to religious centers like Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi in search of god. We just could not leave premises of our house to become a recluse and go too deep dense jungles (forests) in search of cosmic truths of life without burning our karma in totality. Siddhartha Gautama did this mistake and so are millions loitering around religious centers world over. We just could not leave our family responsibilities midway.
As ordained by God karma needs to be burnt in totality. Indulging in karma with an unattached attitude is what nishkama karma yoga of Hinduism all about. We could indulge in yoga meditation even in precincts of our own home. In present times we need not go to jungles (forests) to contemplate on god.
The bhakti yoga principle of Hinduism demands total surrender to God Almighty. This principle of spirituality was not applicable to physical manifest life. During the episode of cheer haran of Draupadi in Mahabharata… it was for Draupadi to act, indulge in requisite karma to save self from disgrace. She just could not practice surrendering self to wishes of God Almighty. God Almighty had no role to play in karma of mankind. As our karma, accordingly manifests our destiny. We just could not mix principles of spiritual life with those of physical manifest world. Mahatma Gandhi committed this mistake. He mixed principles of nonviolence (ahimsa) when facing enemy in the field. The result… Lala Lajpat Rai died a gory death.
Enemy loaded with AK-47 could never be fought with bows and arrows or principles of ahimsa. When facing immoral situations in physical manifest life (like Draupadi)… we need acting with full valor possible. We just could not succumb to wanton pressures of society, no matter what the cause!
