As detailed in Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita the journey of a soul atman on mother earth consisted of 8.4 million types of bodies, a journey roughly equivalent of 96.4 million earthly years.
A soul atman initially manifests form of amoeba (single cell formation), the first manifestation in cosmic life cycle. It further evolves into multi-cell formation, then insect life, plant life, animal life and finally human form. A soul atman manifests human form after crossing 7.3 million manifestations in insect, plant and animal life. In the human form alone we had 1.1 million types of manifestations, bodies.
As God Almighty always acts as Dhrishta (onlooker), never interfering with creation of his… the whole cosmic system was governed by inscrutable laws of karma and evolution. Human form is the highest manifest stage in cosmic life cycle. Beyond human form there was nothing further to evolve.
Lower forms of life evolved faster. Why? The life of an ant begins and ends within 6 to 10 weeks. There were still lower forms of life whose life span was just one day. The average life of human beings as per scriptures was 100. In that span of time, a greater number of animals would evolve to human form. The arithmetic was not difficult. In coming times we would feel shortage of space on mother earth.
Furthermore, human beings reached stage of moksha salvation only when they gained enlightenment. Until that happens, human form goes through unlimited cycles of birth and death. During this period of 1.1 million manifestations in human form, many more animals than humans evolved into human form. If the pace of enlightenment expedites, even then animal evolution would outbid human evolution.
The timeline of human evolution as detailed in scriptures of Hinduism could never be belied. We truly evolve form animal stage. Animals evolved from plant stage. Plants evolved from insect stage. And insects evolved from stage of amoeba.
From Bhagavad Gita point of view, every single lower form of life on mother earth was our brother or sister in the cosmic plan of evolution. Belief or no belief, none could change this absolute fact of life. Jainism, even Hinduism prohibits plucking flowers, killing insects or cutting trees for they exist at a lower level of evolution. When breaking a branch of a tree, we do not hear its cry, but all plants feel the pain.
